Local Author Celebrates First Book

Stephonie K. Williams of Vinton is excited to finally be able to share her book with friends and family in Iowa. Stephonie and her sister Jennifer K. Clark of Wellington, Utah collaborated  for a number of years to get Mark of Royalty written and published.   The book has been available on Amazon and in western states since its release in February.

Taking S.T.E.P.'s to ensure public safety

  The Benton County Sheriff’s Office participated in the March 17th – 20th S.T.E.P. enforcement wave. This project is part of a grant from the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau.  Sheriff Randy Forsyth received a 2010-2011 grant that provides $3,900.00 for radars and Alco-Sensors; $500.00 for training and educational materials; and $12,900.

AmeriCorps NCCC Team Cedar 2 Serves on First Project in Iowa

By: Samantha Czerkas and Jacob Cherry, Corps Members   Cedar 2 is working with the Jackson County Conservation Board for their first project in Maquoketa, Iowa from March 17 – April 8.   Over the course of these three weeks Cedar 2 is putting in eight hour days working to improve the environment, increase animal and human public safety, help with disaster relief and other environmental issues.

Rylie Pflughaupt and Kelsey Mahood, Vikes of the Week. This week's Vinton-Shellsburg Vikes of the Week are Kelsey Mahood and Rylie Pflughaupt. They were nominated by Mrs. Kalous for organizing and successfully putting on a great benefit for the Hill family.

This is a stray, we've named her Lottie. Lottie has some health issues and being away from her home and family is not helping that any. If you are the owner of this sweet girl you need to call the shelter 472-4623 to find out how to reclaim. Lottie is NOT available for adoption at this time, we are waiting for her family to reclaim. Third grade students sing classic American favorites

Third grade students performed patriotic favorites Tuesday evening.      Vinton-Shellsburg third grade students from Tilford Elementary performed their concert Tuesday evening in the school auditorium. The children sang a variety of classic American favorites, including "This Land is Your Land" and "Working on the Railroad." The children explained the history of each song. The concert included a variety of actions and some unique instruments.

Passport Day April 9 at Benton County Recorder's Office

  The Benton Co. Recorder’s Office is hosting a special passport event at the Benton Co. Courthouse, 111 E 4th St. Vinton, Iowa on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm to provide passport information to U.S. citizens and to accept passport applications.  The Benton Co. Recorder’s Office is joining the Department of State in celebrating Passport Day in the USA 2011, a national passport acceptance and outreach event.

VSHS speech students earn 15 Division 1 ratings

These VSHS speech students earned Division 1 ratings at State event.      Congratulations to the Vinton-Shellsburg High School speech team for their wonderful performances at the State Individual Speech Contest held in Vinton, Saturday March 12. Of 19 events, 15 earned I ratings. Those students receiving I ratings are: Back row: Annie Meyer (both events), Alysha Wehage, Liz Fischer, Wes Lyons and Bradley Bergan.

Glory and Bixby need a new home

Glory   Glory is a Terrier/Fox Terrier mix and adoptable dog. She is medium size and young.  Glory was abandoned at the shelter with Bixby.  Her breed is a mystery.  She is all about having fun. She loved to spring into the air and play chase.  Great little dog that loves people.  She is full grown and weighs about 21 lbs.

'Just Dance' fundraiser helps Hill family's fight against cancer

Mr. Farley and Mr. Knutson danced for the students Friday.      Vinton-Shellsburg High School students Kelsey Mahood and Rylie Pflughaupt  organized a "Just Dance" event using the Wii last Friday at the high school auditorium. The event raised money for the Hill family of Garrison. Jim and Sue Hill both have cancer; their daughter, Felicia, is a student at VSHS. Participants are asked to bring a donation for the Hill family.
