VINTON TODAY - March 16th, 2011 12:38 pm
The AmeriCorps Class 17 members have been training for several weeks. They will have their official induction into the program next Wednesday, March 16 (tonight). The ceremony takes place in the Vinton-Shellsburg High School auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited. The teams from the Cedar, Oak and Maple units will leave Vinton the next day for the first of their long-term projects.

Amy Sharar said she tried to add some new challenges to the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School art program this year. The new projects included "me" collages; black and white fish sketching for 6th grade students that included learning about overlapping, pattern, design and positive and negative space as well as bubble letters (also the students learned to identify the seven types of fins on a fish!); a terracotta army; and U.

The annual Vinton-Shellsburg Band Extravaganza concert took place Tuesday evening in the Middle School gym. The VSMS 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands performed, followed by the High School band.
Sixth grade songs included: Cool Cat Shuffle, Galactic Episode, Daffy Ditty and Let's Go Band. Seventh graders performed The Barrington Overture, On A Spring Morning and The Big Circus March.

Central Lutheran School's show choir, "Jubilation Ignited" competed at The Jefferson Invitational last Friday night in Cedar Rapids.
The showchoir is in it's 3rd year of existence and 3rd trip to the Jefferson Invitational.

Blake Dalziel (Mrs. Horton) - Found a cell phone on his bus and told the school he had given it to the bus driver.
Dustin Sondag (Mr. Davis) - Helped to break up a fight of people in the hallway.
Beth Sauer (Mrs. Flemming) - Helped Abby Darland finish her scrapbook for FFA competition.

Colonel Danny McKnight started his most recent memorial journey in Texas, in October of 2008.
He stopped at the grave of Sgt. Lorenzo Ruiz, who was buried there 15 years earlier.
It was just the beginning of McKnight's thousand-mile journey to honor the fallen soldiers who had fought for him -- and with him.

Dentist Sara Stueffen invited the Tilford Elementary students to her Vinton clinic last month, during Dental Month, so they could learn more about how a dentist can help them take good care of their teeth.
But on the day of their planned visit, school was delayed because of fog. The visit was rescheduled to last week, when the Mrs.

Col. Danny McKnight, one of the U.S. Army Commanders in the October 1993 incident now often-called "Black Hawk Down," will be spending the day in Vinton today, March 14.
More than 160 public safety officials from several states arerpresent to hear McKnight (who was injured twice during that mission) discuss his role in that historic event.

Wherever Allison O'Shea is next March 12th, when she celebrates her 24th birthday -- or wherever she is for any other birthday -- it is unlikely to be more memorable than her 23rd birthday, on March 12, 2011, in Vinton, Iowa.
Allison, from Marietta, Ga., was the subject of a surprise birthday party thrown by her teammates on Cedar 3.

As part of its longstanding commitment to support the communities in which it does business, Cargill has donated $50,000 to the Benton County Conservation Foundation to help fund the new Nature Center adjacent to Rodgers Park near Vinton.
The Center is a retrofitted 4,000 square foot ranch home.
