Operation Midway Saturation Patrol

  The Benton County Sheriff’s Office participated in the May 6th – 7th Operation Midway Saturation Patrol. This project is part of a grant from the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau.  Sheriff Randy Forsyth received a 2010-2011 grant that provides $3,900.00 for radars and Alco-Sensors; $500.00 for training and educational materials; and $12,900.

Mother faces vehicular homicide charge; 6-month-old son died in October accident

Nicole Jacobs, charged with vehicular homicide after 6-month-old son died in crash.           Deputies from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office arrested Nicole Jacobs, 37, of Kanawha, Iowa, on May 10, 2011, following their investigation of a motor vehicle accident that occurred north of Keystone on October 8, 2010, that killed her six month old son (Lincoln Jacobs).        Nicole Jacobs was driving eastbound in the 1300 block of 68th street at approximately 2:30 p.

Part of what we do each day is out of habit.  One of the things we keep our eye on is our numbers, this is really the only way we have to gauge how many people are reading the website. Last year we were thrilled to break the 1 MILLION mark a little after our first anniversary. Today, in less than 2 months, we have set another record.

VSMS ELP students give 'Tour of Egypt'

Sami Mancinas spoke about Egyptian art.      The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School ELP (Expanded Learning Program) students gave their classmates a "Tour of Ancient Egypt" on Fri., May 6.     The students wore costumes representing cloths worn in Egypt thousands of years ago as they discussed ancient art, medicine, worship, architecture, food and mummification.

Center Point-Urbana students seek to set world jumping jacks record

     The Center Point-Urbana students at the elementary, high school and middle school will be trying to set a new world record this afternoon.      At the middle school in Urbana, and the high school and elementary in Center Point, students will begin doing jumping jacks shortly after 3 p.m. today. Organizers of this event hope to have more than 1,000 people doing jumping jacks simultaneously.

Mechanical fire spreads from pickup to several other cars at VSHS parking lot

Willow Huber inspects damage to her vehicle after the 6-vehicle fire Tuesday at VSHS.      A parade of tow trucks and insurance agents were en route to Vinton-Shellsburg High School this afternoon after a fire caused by mechanical problems significantly damaged or destroyed several vehicles.     A pickup truck belonging to Logan Halstead caught fire and the flames spread to the car to the left, owned by Matt Walston, and the minivan to the right, belonging to the Huber family and driven to school by Willow Huber.

46 VSHS students achieve on or above 90% on ITED's

  This afternoon VSHS recognized (46) young people for their outstanding academic achievement on the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED). These students achieved at or above the 90th percentile on their 2011 ITED test!   Thanks to VSHS PTO and Tharp Design/Black & Gold Shop, our academic achievers have a VSHS Academics t-shirt to proudly display their accomplishment.

Kirkwood Community College to Honor 2,900 Graduates

  Kirkwood Community College will soon honor more than 2,900 students taking positive steps for their futures. The college will hold commencement ceremonies for its college credit and GED/adult high school programs in mid-May. Both ceremonies will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. Kirkwood will confer more than 2,400 college credit degrees, diplomas and certificates for study in the past academic year.

New cameras to be added to VSHS with PPEL funding

     Long before security cameras helped solve last Friday's bomb threat at VInton-Shellsburg High School, principal Kirk Johnson and other administrators had begun working with security companies and the Vinton Police Department on obtaining and placing additional cameras.       The camera project is on the list of PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy) projects the school board approved during its meeting Monday.

AmeriCorps Maple 4 to help with VPRD projects, events

AmeriCorps NCCC Maple 4 members clean the Vinton pool; the team will make many improvements there.      While many of the AmeriCorps NCCC teams have left VInton to spend several weeks working in other states, the Maple 4 team will be working through May and June with the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department.      The team began by cleaning at the pool, where they will spend much of the month of May. Painting of the pool, bath house, water slide as well as construction of lifeguard chairs and other projects at the pool are also on the schedule.
