Vinton-Shellsburg High School Principal Kirk Johnson has informed Vinton-Shellsburg administrators that he is leaving the district at the end of this school year. He has accepted a similar position at the Waukee School District. Waukee is in eastern Dallas County but is growing very rapidly as the Des Moines metropolitan area expands.

We've had several cases of police seizing dogs for possible neglect (all parties are innocent until proved guilty) but in the meantime we have the responsibility of care, feeding, and vet care until it is determined what will happen and sometimes it takes several weeks plus, to sort it all out. We've had several of these cases (with multiple animals) in the last couple of years and have absorbed the cost in the majority of them but we can't keep doing it and we need help.

It is very unlikely that someone, a half century ago, said to Arlene Wear of Norway and her three sisters: You will be playing basketball together in the 21st Century, on some of the very same courts you are playing on now.
But they are.
And nobody probably told Kay Kubik, when she was wearing the green and white of the Rowley Rockets, that one day her granddaughter would watch her play basketball and take a photo of her playing the game she loves -- with a phone (yes, a phone!) that is smaller than a checkbook.

An 1886 novel and a musical based on a 2001 movie provided the material that VInton-Shellsburg High School students used to earn a spot in last week's All-State Large Group Speech Festival.
Vinton residents had a chance to see those performances during the Jazz Pizazz contest Friday night.

There was plenty of jazz, and lots of pizazz, i.e, dazzling style, flamboyance, flair and vigorous spirit, at the annual Vinton-Shellsburg Jazz Pizazz Friday night.
The high school and middle school jazz bands performed, followed by the 12-member high school Freshman Select Choir and the Chamber Choir.

The Vinton Unlimited Mini-Masters began yesterday! The contest runs from Thursday, Feb. 24, through Saturday, Feb. 26.
The event is not only free, but you also have the opportunity to WIN MONEY during this event. All you have to do is pick up a scorecard at any of the participating businesses, play the course in any order, and leave your scorecard at the last place you play.

IMCA just had their first hole-in-one! Be sure to stop out at 1800 West D Street for the FASTEST FAIRWAY on the Mini-Masters Tour! Open 8am-4:3pm Thursday and Friday.
Hit your ball up the ramp for a trip around the racetrack, through the tube and back around into the 'hole'.
Prizes awarded for a hole-in-one (or two). Be sure to stop by the 'concession stand' for a snack while you wait your turn.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced the awarding of over $130,000 per year for 3 years to support underage drinking and binge drinking prevention in Benton, Clinton, Jackson and Jones Counties. This funding is part of a 5 year Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) IDPH received from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration which began last year, funding over $2 million per year in prevention efforts across the state.
