Trudy Evans spent some time Tuesday morning during the meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry helping a new member learn some new stitches. Tammy Surface recently began joining the women of the group Tuesday mornings at the Vinton Library. See another VT story about the group HERE.

(Editor's note: The first Maple Unit of the AmeriCorps NCCC in Vinton will graduate early next month. They invite Vinton residents to join them for a potluck this Saturday, Jan. 29, from 6-8 p.m. in the Iowa Braille School gym See more details Here. The VSHS Debate team: Hannah Leichsenring, Erin Fowler, Alysha Wehage, Bradley Bergen, Willow Huber and Morgan Latting deserve credit for on their "strong performance" at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Debate Tournament held in Ankeny this past weekend, says VSHS speech teacher and coach Eric Upmeyer.

For the Vinton-Shellsburg band students, from 6-12th grade, participating in band is a family effort.
"Every band family is responsible for selling six tickets and for bringing two pies," says Nancy Jorgensen, who who has been a VS band mom for several years.
Hundreds of people filled the VSHS cafeteria Friday night for the annual event.

Vinton drivers headed to the VS basketball game and Band Booster Soup Supper may have experienced an extra detour, due to a train derailment. Between C Avenue and 8th Avenue, the train left the tracks in several places, and stopped. Drivers could get through on C and 8th, although the flashing crossarms were down. Many made the detour to the 4th Ave.

Twice each week, the Vinton Skate Center turns into a place for pre-schoolers to play.
The Vinton Parks and Recreation Tot Lot program offers a variety of small playground (indoor) equipment and pedal-powered vehicles for use by children too young for school. The program goes from 9:30 to 11:30 most Monday and Wednesdays at the Skate Center.

Vincent Scudella of Canon City, Colo., gave the closing speech when he completed his term of service at the AmeriCorps NCCC campus in Charleston, S.C., in the spring of 2006.
He had arrived at that campus in August of 2005, not knowing the challenges that would await. Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, changing the plans for AmeriCorps teams based at the campus many nicknamed "Chuck.

Jim Thompson, District Director Area 3 for the Iowa State FSA Office has announced his retirement from the FSA Agency after 26 years of service.
During the summers of his high school and college years (1960’s), Thompson was a temporary field man for the Benton County ASCS taking care of the old government bin sites.
