Mr. Frazier's students entertain families with winter plays
The Big Bad Wolf did not kill the Three Little Pigs on purpose. He accidentally sneezed them to death.
"I was framed!" declared the Wolf.
Likewise, the Woodsman did not use his three wishes from the fairy like you thought. He wasted them wishing for a sausage for supper.
Mr. John Frazier's second grade students at Tilforod elementary re-told these and other fairy tales during their winter play concert Friday afternoon.
Fire destroys rural Brandon home
For more than 35 years, Lester and Donna Geiger lived in a one-story house north of Minne Estema Park in rural Brandon, keeping it warm in the winter with wood and heating oil.
Lester said he was cleaning up a heating oil leak -- he had filled the tank a day earlier and there was a problem with the filter -- with wood chips. Something caused the wood and oil to ignite, and soon the house was in flames.
Area residents digging out
For the first time this winter season, Vinton area residents are manning shovels, snow plows and other sidewalk- and street-clearing equipment. Approximately five inches of snow covered the ground as residents awoke Thursday morning.
Utility's power provider expands wind power capabilities
East-Central Iowa REC’s power provider is adding more wind generation to its transmission portfolio of energy resources. Along with eleven other distribution cooperatives here in the state of Iowa, ECI REC purchases their power from Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) based in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.
Today, CIPCO announced that they have entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement to buy 41 megawatts of electricity from a third – the Elk Wind Farm.
VSMS band members perform winter concert
Director Jody Biershenk led the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands, as well as the VSMS Jazz Band, in their annual winter concert Thursday evening.
The bands played a variety of popular, patriotic and holiday-themed music as parents, relatives and friends filled the VSHS auditorium to hear the concert.

Winter celebration: Mrs. Barron's class sings of snow, snowmen and reindeer
They sang about a pet snowball that disappeared, after wetting the bed.
They did a new version of a favorite dance: The Reindeer-Pokey.
They sang about the originality of snowflakes and the mystery of snow.
That's how the 1B students of Rhonda Barron celebrated Christmas, performing a variety of winter-themed songs for parents and grandparents Thursday afternoon in the Tilford auditorium.

Vehicular homicide charges filed in July 2009 fatal crash
A 21 year old Vinton man has been charged as a result of a fatality accident that occurred in Benton County on July 30, 2009.
Brandon Leo Hundley has been charged with Vehicular Homicide / Operating while Intoxicated, a class B felony. The charge is a result of an investigation into a single vehicle accident on 33rd Avenue Drive just north of 59th Street Trail which is located about 3.
Duong pleads guilty in immigration case
On December 14, 2010, Chan Gia Duong, 43, the owner of the Peony Chinese restaurant in Vinton, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to harbor aliens for commercial gain and filing a false 2007 tax return.
At the plea hearing, Duong admitted he conspired to hire and harbor illegal aliens at Peony restaurants he operated with his wife, Phung Ca Long, in Vinton and Tama.
