Sanders vs. Sass: Round 3 goes to Sanders, again

There was only one local contested race on the Benton County ballot on Tuesday. And it was the same race that was on the ballot in 2006, and 2002. And it had the same result. Jason Sanders defeated Ed Sass on Tuesday, by an unofficial margin of 5,632 to 3,656. Sanders, a Republican, first ran against Sass in 2002, when Sass was the incumbent supervisor.

Singing with Simon: Once-in-a-lifetime experience for VSHS choir members

World-renowned singer Simon Estes gave Vinton-Shellsburg students and choir members a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity during his visit to Vinton, said VS Choir Director Eric Mohlis.  "For myself and the students it was a-once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us," said Mohlis. "As we got into the assembly it became apparent to all of us.

Lutheran Home Auxiliary Fall Luncheon Friday

The Vinton Lutheran Home Auxiliary Fall Salad Luncheon will take place this Friday, Nov. 5, at the U.S. Bank Community Room. The bake sale begins at 9 a.m. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $6. The proceeds will go towards a new weight chair and medication cart. 

Gary Morris singing in Vinton after local fan invites him

Gary Morris, the original singer of 'Wind Beneath my Wings,' comes to Vinton for Sunday concert.      Gary Morris, the singer whose voice was the first to bring us "Wind Beneath My Wings," is coming to Vinton.      Why Vinton? Because he was asked.      Barb Rego, who area children know as a worker at Happy Time day care as well as the Vinton Public Library, is a relative of Morris.

Heat assistance available: Sign-up underway now

  Alliant Energy is reminding customers that Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) agencies are now accepting applications for the upcoming heating season. The program provides dollars to moderate and low-income level households to help pay a portion of their winter gas or electric bills.   “It’s important people know they do not have to wait until they are behind on their utility bills to receive energy assistance,” said Tim Heinrich, director of customer support services, Alliant Energy.

A final salute to a worn-out flag

Final Salute: Scouts join legion members in saluting flags during their retirment. Pack 47 Cub Scouts have shared many experiences with local veterans groups.  One of those traditions is the Flag Retirement Ceremony with the Vinton American Legion.  The Scouts joined the Legion members at the Post 57 Legion Hall Friday evening for a final salute and retirement by burning of dozens of worn flags.  The Scouts stood with the veterans and saluted, and helped pile the flags on the rack for burning.
