Career Day: VSMS students learn about variety of jobs

Career Day gave VSMS students a chance to see, and experience, a variety of careers. Today (Wednesday, Nov 17) is Career Day at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School. The eighth grade students learned about a variety of careers from people in those occupations. The visitors discussed their jobs, why they like their work and the challenges they face. The students heard from a financial advisor, police officer, and medical professionals, and others.

Katie Hancock to perform with Opus Choir at ISU, Thursday

Katie Hancock of VSMS will sing with Opus Choir at ISU Thursday, Nov. 18.        Every year, more than 3,500 middle school choir students send in an audition tape for the Iowa Choral Directors Association Opus Choir. Only 760 students are selected – in four different 180-member choirs.      This year, Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School student Katie Hancock is one of those who was chosen to sing with the Opus Choir.

Supervisors tour LEC, EOC again

Workers carry a limestone block to place it on south side of LEC, facing courthouse.     Scott Hansen went to the top of the courthouse and took a photo when the first machines started moving the first dirt as the digging began for the foundation of the Benton County Law Enforcement Center.       The date: June 3.      "It's hard to believe that they started digging in June, and they already have the building nearly enclosed," said Hansen on Tuesday morning.

Save those Coupons and help a military family

The Benton County Volunteer Program exists to meet needs in the area. They have added a project that helps those overseas serving out country as well.   The group has adopted a military base in Germany where they send our expired. "The response has been amazing. Green Schools: School Board hears about VSMS program's successes

V-S tree leads VGH Holiday Tree Walk bidding

Christmas in black and gold: V-S tree has highest silent bid so far in VGH Holiday Tree Walk.      The white, black and gold Vinton-Shellsburg Christmas tree created by the Vinton-Shellsburg cooks has so far been the tree with the highest silent bid at the VGH Holiday Tree Walk.       The cooks used mostly home-made ornaments with black and gold, and the V-S logo to decorate the white tree. As of Wednesday morning, the high bid for this tree was $300.

US Bank donates $5,000 to Junior Achievement for Benton County programs

Jon Kremer & Dana Eldred of US Bank present $5,000 check to JA's Barb Rawson (center) on Monday. Jon Kremer and Dana Eldred, right, of the Vinton U.S. Bank branch office presented a check for $5,000 from the U.S. Bank Foundation to Barb Rawson of the Eastern Iowa Junior Achievement organization Monday morning at the bank.  "The Vinton community has been wonderful," said Rawson.  The Junior Achievement program works with schools to bring in volunteer educators from a variety of fields.
