Vinton city workers spent much of Monday morning placing 40 boxes of Christmas lights on the two large evergreen trees on the south side of the courthouse lawn.
Those lights will go on for the first time this Thursday evening, when Santa arrives after the annual Veterans Patriotic Christmas Parade.
Jeff Kenney and Mark Smith did the stringing of the lights, assisted by colleagues on the ground.

For 26 years, Frank Ohlsen has been a mentor to those who have struggled with alcohol and drug abuse issues.
Now that he is retiring from Farm Bureau, Ohlsen's main goal is to do more to help those people.
"I'm going to get some schooling," Ohlsen said Friday afternoon, during his retirement reception at the Benton County Farm Bureau office.

The Vinton-Shellsburg students, including National Honor Society and FFA members, with the help of some teachers and adult volunteers, placed greenery throughout downtown Vinton on Saturday, as many retailers participated in the annual Dollars for Scholars fund-raiser. It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, just in time for Thursday's patriotic Christmas parade and the arrival of Santa Claus.

Even when she was terminally ill, Barb Becker Guillory thought of others. She was concerned about other patients, as well as the nurses who cared for her during her sickness.
After her death, Barb’s widower, Glenn wanted to share with others in the way that Barb would have.
Guillory presented the hospital a donation that will pay for a device to make it easier and safer for nurses to move immobile patients at the hospital.

That play on words came from a Vinton Parks and Recreation Board member Thursday morning as the board discussed one of the entertainment for Party in the Park 2011.
The Gooseman is coming.
Paul Messerschmidt -- a former western Iowa school classmate of two Vinton residents, VPRD Board President Jeff Peterson and Bob Noren -- will bring his flock of trained geese to Vinton in late June.
