VSHS Drama Dept. to perform 'Sound of Music'

'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? Sister Sophia (Maddie Springer) ,Sister Berthe (Miranda Swallom), Sister  Margaretta (Liz Moen), and Mother Abbess (Emma Clingman) rehearse the song, "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" for the upcoming VSHS Drama Dept's Sound of Music.  This Rodgers and Hammerstein classic will be  presented at the Vinton-Shellsburg auditorium on Friday, November 5  and Saturday, November 6 at 7 pm and Sunday, November 7 at 2 pm.

Simon Estes shares his story with VSHS students

Simon Estes discusses solo vs. choral singing with VSHS choir members.   Simon Estes did not grow up dreaming of being one of the most renowned opera singers in the entire world. He never even heard opera music until he went to college.  Estes, who will perform a concert Saturday evening at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School auditorium, shared his story with the Vinton-Shellsburg High School student body Thursday afternoon.

Peony restaurant owners charged with conspiring to harbor illegal aliens

          Chan Gia Duong, 43, and Phung Ca Long, 41, restaurant owners from Vinton, have been charged with one count of conspiracy to harbor aliens for commercial gain.  Duong faces an additional charge of filing a false tax return.  Long faces an additional charge of making false statements to Medicaid relating to health care.

Be the Wall: Area teens, adults take stand on under age drinking

Elysia Cain tells the story of Enrique Camarena, who died fighting the Mexican drug cartels. The "Be the Wall" campaign against drug use and under age drinking has been taking place throughout October. The Above the Influence Coalition, which includes students from area schools and the ASAC office, held a ceremony at noon on Thursday at the Benton County Courthouse. A "wall" of bricks with the signatures of several hundred area residents who sign to show their commitment to do what they can to prevent drug use and under age drinking was set up in the courthouse.

Demolition continues in flood buyout area

Workers from D.W. Zinser prepare to demolish this home on A Avenue near the river. There are a lot more empty lots in Vinton now, as the last of approximately 30 homes in the FEMA flood buyout program.  Crews from D.W. Zinser from Walford have been working in that area for the past few weeks.

Tillage not a long-term solution for soybean SDS, say experts

  If you were one of the many Iowa farmers to be hit with Soybean Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) this year, tilling up the soil and remaining crop residue is not a good long-term solution. In fact, tillage can actually lead to poor soil drainage and compaction which are two conditions that promote SDS.   SDS is caused by a fungus present in many Iowa soils that infects soybean roots and produces a toxin that moves up the plant and kills the leaves.

'Educating Rita' : ACT 1, Old Creamery Theater plan event for November

  ACT I of Benton County is pleased to announce a special cooperative event with The Old Creamery Theatre Company of Amana. On Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21, 2010, The Old Creamery will present the play "Educating Rita" by Willy Russell at the Vinton Country Club, as part of a dinner theatre program sponsored by ACT I.

Disaster assistance offered to 2009 soybean growers

  Sign up has begun for the Crop Assistance Program which continues through December 9, 2010 for land physically located in Benton and Iowa counties. “Producers of soybeans who suffered losses due to excessive moisture or related conditions in 2009 are eligible,” says Calvin Rickels, County Executive Director for the Benton County FSA Office.

Sold: Two properties in poor condition to get new owners

Sold: This dilapidated property went to the highest bidder Thursday, at a Vinton Council meeting.   The Vinton City Council meeting Thursday evening included something that is not usually part of a government gathering -- an auction.  The dilapated property at 514 East 12th Street in southeast Vinton was listed for bid after the last city council meeting. The council announced that it would take bids at Thursday's meeting.
