If you live or work in Vinton, chances are you will be receiving a call from a neighbor, friend or colleague today.
Fifty area residents and business people have volunteered to be "prisoners" for the annual MDA lock-up. They have been sentenced to an hour at Pizza Ranch, where they make phone calls soliticiting donations.

Workers continue to make progess on the Benton County Law Enforcement Center. Exterior brick work continues toward the east while a workers used a crane to lift steel roof trusses into place.
Jerry Petermeier continues to update the supervisors on the progress of the project during their weekly meetings, and plans to give them frequent tours of the facility.

World renowned Iowa bass-baritone Simon Estes will bring his “Roots and Wings” concert tour to every county in his home state over the next three years.
Farmers Savings Bank & Trust, Vinton will sponsor the Simon Estes performance in Benton County on October 28, and 30, 2010. The tour will raise funds for scholarships through the Simon Estes Iowa Educational foundation and for local projects in Iowa.

This is just a reminder that the Be the Wall event will be held tomorrow at the Benton County Courthouse at noon.
We will be located on the South side of the building, by the Treasurer’s office. Please feel free to join us to celebrate Red Ribbon Week and renew our community commitment to preventing underage drinking and drug use! Reminder- wear red if you can!
The wall contains signatures of area adults who express their commitment to oppose under age drinking.

One by one, they stood on the platform, and shared their goals for the upcoming season.
Then they waited to see how much money their efforts could raise for the Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling program.
The VS wrestling team and coach Steve Johnson held their first labor auction Tuesday evening in the VSHS gym. Auctioneer Duane Johnson called the auction.

Two hundred and seventeen steps.
That's how far it is from the home of the Vinton-Shellsburg National Honor Society President Meghan Owens to the home of retired Appeals Court Judge Van Zimmer.
As Owens introduced Judge Zimmer during the NHS induction Tuesday evening, she told the audience that she counted the steps from her house to Zimmer's.

Like every other high school program, the Union football team is a community effort.
And the success of this year's undefeated Class 3A District 5 championship team is a community event.
Even the guy who was the Union coach's football coach 31 years ago was there to see the final game.
Bob Olson, who was Joe Hadachek's coach at Dysart, was an honorary captain last Friday when the Union captains went to midfield for the coin toss.

The Vinton-Shellsburg High School Marching Band has completed another very successful season.
The band achieved its best overall finish in school history at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Marching Invitational, 4thplace.
The band also received its 14thDivision I rating in school history by earning its 5thstraight Division I rating at State Marching Festival.

When 12 of the best bench rest rifle shooters in the U.S. go to France to represent their country next year, a Vinton man will be among the dozen.
Dave Coots of rural Vinton finished among the top 12 shooters in the National Bench Rest Shooters Association qualifying events this year.
He competed in a variety of contests all over the U.

Rich and Mary Jo Hainstock welcomed Vinton Unlimited members to their building Monday night as VU resumed its "After Hours" event.
This spring, the Hainstocks purchased the building which had most recently been the home of the Vinton Eagle. Rich is leading the remodeling effort, doing much of the work himself and hiring a few others to help.
