West Branch auto shop owner Virgil Gingrich and Garrison's Billy Grimm took turns trying to disconnect the other's trailer from his truck as the two were the last of several participants in Thursday's trailer races to keep their vehicles running and their trailers securely fastened after several laps of crashing and banging.
Gingrich eventually was able to force Grimm's trailer loose, earning him the plaque presented by 2013 Fair Queen Willow Huber.
Despite the name, the event is not really a race but a circutous demolition derby.; the drivers do circle the track, but nobody counts laps and the object is not to finish first but to be the last driver with a vehicle that can still move with a trailer that is still attached.
One driver walked away from his vehicle when it landed upside-down; another driver scrambled safely away from his car when a fire engulfed the engine.
The event was the finale of the "Night of Destruction," which included a variety of unique automotive events.
