The National Weather Service office out of the Quad Cities has issued a Heat Advisory. Please take a few moments to reacquaint yourself with heat related illness that could impact your family and loved ones.

A large area of hot and humid air building over the plains will overspread eastern Iowa, northeast Missouri and western Illinois this week. Temperatures will reach well into the 90s with heat index values as high as 100 to 105 during the afternoon and early evening hours today. Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday: conditions will remain warm and muggy through the overnight hours as well.

Heat advisory remains in effect from noon today to 10 pm Tuesday

* Timing: highest heat index values will occur in the afternoon and evening hours today and Tuesday.

* Heat index values: near 100 today and then from 100 to near 105 Tuesday. Readings will diminish only into the 70s during the overnight hours.

* Impacts: excessive heat will result in an increased risk of heat related illnesses.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures and high humidity is expected. This combination will lead to possible heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids. Stay in an air-conditioned room. Stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency...call 9 1 1.
