The Iowa Firefighters Convention is being hosted by Garrison & Vinton fire departments and officially takes place from September 4th through the 8th. This is the 135th convention and Vinton is excited to have it take place in our community! If you have been anywhere near the fairgrounds or Tilford Elementary over the past month or so, you've seen the work taking place to prepare to host several thousand people in our community.
When the Convention was in Vinton several years ago, people loved our community and couldn't wait to come back! Below are a few things to keep in mind over the next 2 weeks, but the most important thing is to remember to welcome the people who risk their lives each day to keep our families safe. These firefighters are a great asset to every community across the state of Iowa and we can't thank them enough. So, do your part to say, "Thank You" when you see them on the street or in a local store.
A Few Things to Remember:- Many of our guests will bring their golf carts to get around town with. Vinton already allows golf carts on the streets, but this influx of people will increase golf cart traffic. Please be aware of golf carts on the road, be patient, and make room for them going down the street.
- Most of the firefighters will be staying at the fairgrounds. The fenced in area is reserved for those taking part in the firefighter convention and the general public should respect their space. You will not be permitted in this fenced in area, so please don't try.
- RESTAURANTS: Please note that, except for supper on Friday and Saturday night, everyone will be on their own for meals. Please have ample staff and product available and ready to go during mealtimes in particular.
- There will be competitions taking place throughout the 3 days they are here and the public is welcome to watch. This is a great opportunity to see the firefighters in action and to experience what they do to train.
