At the high school, we have our own coalition group called Reality Check. We have been called many things before, but now, we are hoping that this name will stick to us. Over the last few years of me being in high school, my freshmen year there was only 2 members, sophomore year there was 4 steady members, and we did a couple out of town activities. But now, my junior year, we have 9-10 members and are growing still.
Four of the members just went to the Take Charge Conference in September. We met many other students from other schools who want to change their schools and in their communities. It was a great learning experience.
We had different lessons from ASAC and other members of organizations around the area. We learned more information about drugs; both over the counter and illegal, alcohol and tobacco. We also had a team player activity which I believe brought the four members and Ms. Kirschbaum closer together. There was also a Kirkwood Panel, which was just a group of college students out of different studies that answered questions about college life and drugs/alcohol usage.
With the information that we learned that day, we are planning ahead for the following months on what we will be doing. We have never been this excited for this group to reach and plan goals for the year.
