Ryan Davis, the 2013 Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year, will become the Shellsburg Elementary principal for the 2014-15 school year if the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board approves the recommendation from Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock.

Davis began his career as a grades 7-12 science teacher at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (Minn.) Community School District. He returned to Vinton in 2008 as high school assistant principal and at-risk coordinator. He has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Northern Iowa; a master’s degree in educational leadership from Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn.; and his certificate in education administration from Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minn.

At VSHS, he has been involved in the starting of the Alternative High School. Throughout this school year, he has also worked in Shellsburg at times while principal Sheila Wendel has been on medical leave. She will retire at the end of this school year.

The district has begun accepting applications for the high school assistant principal position.

The school board will discuss the changes and the superintendent's recommendation during its regular monthly meeting on Monday, April 14.
