On Saturday April 12, 2014, at about 4:19 PM, the Benton County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call regarding a female that had been struck by a car in the 5700 block of 32nd Avenue, about 2 miles south of Urbana. Benton County Sheriff's deputies responded, along with Urbana Fire Department, Shellsburg First Responders, and Center Point Ambulance personnel. Upon arrival responding units found a 58 year old female from Vinton, had been struck by a vehicle that was northbound on 32nd Avenue.

Witnesses were able to provide deputies with the license plate of the striking vehicle and an attempt to locate was broadcast in an attempt to locate the driver and vehicle involved. Deputies were later notified that Monticello Police had located the car and driver in Monticello. The driver has been identified as a 77 year old male from Monticello.

According to witness statements, the victim was on the road attempting to retrieve a dog that had been struck by another vehicle. The accused driver involved allegedly struck the dog and the victim as he was northbound on 32nd Avenue.

The victim was treated and released from Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

The dog died at the scene from injuries it received in the incident.

At this time the investigation into this incident continues by Benton County Sheriff’s Office. Charges are pending, and the Monticello Police Department is assisting in this investigation.
