A total of 538 walkers and runners helped the Breast Cancer Survivors raise $10,000 for the Virginia Gay Hospital Gifts of Hope program Friday night at Riverside Park.

Despite the rain which fell up to race time, the volunteers, walker and runners showed up to compete and help others.

VGH Foundation Director Mike Timmermans told the crowd that it's great to live in a city like Vinton that cares.

Charlotta Toth-Fisher told the crowd about how she was diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago, and the words of a friend who had also survived the disease helped her believe she too, could survive.

Now, Toth-Fisher told the audience, the local breast cancer survivors group offers support to every woman facing the disease.

After the event, the event committee presented Timmermans a $10,000 check, which represented the amount raised from the event, the second annual Party in Pink 5K.

Timmermans told the group that the fund is available to any woman who feels the need, without application. The fund pays for women's services including mammography to those who cannot afford it.

"If they tell us they need it, they need it," he said, urging the audience to tell everyone they know about the program.
