It all started with an announcement that a couple from Union, IA were the 5,000th recipient of the Daily Point of Light Award. I was fascinated that a couple from Iowa was being recognized nationally for their volunteer service. I researched their non-profit, Outreach, Inc. and I knew I wanted to get involved. I signed up for a food packaging event last September in Marshalltown. After leaving that event, I was inspired to see if we could do something similar in Vinton. After meeting with the church council at Bethlehem Lutheran, we decided to sponsor the event and reached out to other churches in the area. Blessed Hope immediately joined us and we decided to make it a community event so that everyone in Vinton could participate. That is how Vinton Feeds the World began.

On September 7th, in conjunction with Outreach, Inc., Bethlehem Lutheran Church & Blessed Hope Church will be having a food packaging event at the Vinton Skate Center at 1pm. During this event, we will be packaging 20,000+ meals to be distributed locally and internationally. Each meal costs .25. At least 1/2 of the meals packaged will be kept in Iowa. We are working with local resources and may be able to keep them all in Benton, County.

In the United States, as a whole, the statistics show that 1 out of every 6 people is food insecure, the majority of those people are children. Hunger is an epidemic everywhere, even in Benton, County.

We need 180 people to make this event a success. We have 70 people signed up so far. Join us. It only takes an hour to make a difference.
