News : Fire causes major damage to Vinton garage

This toy fire truck was among items damaged in Ken Tharp's garage on Tuesday.

After spending a few hours discussing fire prevention and fire safety with area elementary students, Vinton firefighters responded to a report of a garage fire at 610 6th Ave. in Vinton on Tuesday afternoon.

Kenny Tharp said he had been working on some projects in the garage and believe hot material from his welding area ignited items in a garbage can nearby.

Firemen quickly extinguished the fire, but two vehicles and most of the contents of the garage sustained significant damage. Also affected by the heat was an old toy fire truck.
