Skyler Brinker spent part of her 8th birthday at the Vinton Fire Station, where she learned a little about how to operate the nozzle of a fire hose.

She and dozens of Tilford students continued the observation of Fire Prevention Week with the annual tour of the fire station on Tuesday.

Several firefighters helped with the event. Josh McGowan gave some safety lessons, telling the children why not to return inside a burning house to save a pet. Dan Albert explained the equipment on the fire trucks. Jerry Dedrick and others demonstrated how firefighters enter a house to rescue victims from fire.

The students all took turns spraying water from one of the fire hoses.

The activities continue Thursday with fire truck rides, Operation E.D.I.T.H. Thursday evening and the VFD breakfast on Sunday.
