Vinton Today has asked Vinton-Shellsburg Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock and the principals of each district building (High School, Middle School, Tilford Elementary and Shellsburg) to share what's new at each building as the school year begins.

Today, we feature Shellsburg Elementary, one of two buildings with a new Principal.

Sheila Wendel had been the curriculum director for the district, working mostly in the Tilford building. She replaces Shelly Peterson as principal at Shellsburg. Mrs. Peterson is now the principal at the Middle School, replacing Mike Timmermans, who retired from the district at the end of last year.

Sheila Wendel

Hello!

My name is Sheila Wendel and I am beginning my first year as Principal at Shellsburg. This is my fifth year in the district. I am also K-12 Director of Instruction. I have been Assoc. Principal at Tilford prior to coming to Shellsburg. I look forward to working with the students, staff and community at Shellsburg Elementary.

I have three children. I am happy to introduce you to three new teachers:

Katie Harms, Kindergarten

Hello! My name is Katie Harms and I will be teaching Kindergarten at Shellsburg Elementary.

I graduated from Mt. Mercy College with my Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education with endorsements in reading, and early childhood. I’m looking forward to my first year of teaching.

Kelsey Blatter, Third Grade

Hello! My name is Kelsey Blattler and I will be teaching third grade at Shellsburg Elementary.

Kelsey is the daughter of Rich and Sue Blattler. She grew up in Shellsburg and attended Shellsburg Elementary herself.

She went to UNI and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and endorsements in Reading and Coaching. Along with teaching Kelsey will be coaching JV and Assistant Varsity volleyball coach Vinton-Shellsburg High School.

Kelsey is very excited to be back at her old school doing what she’s always dreamed of doing.

Megan Evan, Special Ed and BLC

Hello! My name is Megan Even and I will be teaching in the Sp. Ed. BLC (Behavior Learning Center) at Shellsburg Elementary.

I grew up in Jesup, Iowa along with two brothers and a sister. I graduated from Jesup High School and moved to Cedar Rapids to attend Mount Mercy College. I majored in Elementary Education and received endorsements in Early Childhood, Special Education and Reading. I am looking forward to being part of the Vinton-Shellsburg School District and I am excited to start the new school year. Go Vikings!
