50 years: Light display Larry Kersten began in 1964 still brings many visitors

Moving decorations and tens of thousands of lights draw many visitors to the Koopman farm.

Santas pulling the sleigh and a rocket are among the displays created by Larry Kersten.

Santa saying "Shhh" while peeking from the chimney is a favorite among Larry Kersten's creations.

The moving mechanical Christmas display with tens of thousands of lights as a background is again open for holiday drive-by visitors.

Heidi Koopman and her helpers are continuing the tradition her father, Larry, began in 1964.

JE December 1, 2014, 1:25 pm I can remember distinctly being able to see that big blast of light from north of Vinton from as far away as 25,000 feet over Rockford, Illinois, returning to Waterloo from Chicago on business trips. On a clear night, you could read the landscape below like a map. In those days, I guess, there must have been more clear nights. One more way to appreciate the handiwork of my dear VHS classmates of 57, Larry and Carolyn.
