Vinton-Shellsburg seniors Kylie Miracle and Riley Ries will receive recognition from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad during the 2015 Iowa State Fair in honor of the work they did for Operation Backpack, the program designed to send food home each weekend for students from needy families.

Nearly 100 families participated in the program which Ries and Miracle began. The two worked with HACAP, local businesses and student volunteers to arrange, pick up, package and deliver food to the families. Next year, others will carry on the program.

About the award:

This spring, Governor Branstad, Lt. Governor Reynolds, the Governor’s Council on Child Health and Wellness and many partners joined forces to recognize Iowa youth through the creation of the Governor’s Youth Action Award. The award honors the efforts of Iowa students in Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The students submitted posters, essays and/or videos highlighting healthy behaviors or sharing ideas to engage others. The Iowa Action for Healthy Kids Coalition assisted with the selection of winners for each genre.

The presentation takes place Saturday, Aug. 13.
