Nearly 150 Special Olympians and their families will converge on the Vinton Skate and Activity Center on Friday, August 28 for the 2015 Special Olympics Iowa Unified Miniature Golf Tournament. About 40 community volunteers are needed to help with the event.
Special Olympics Iowa has chosen Vinton to host the 2015 Unified Miniature Golf Tournament to be held on August 28th. “Unified Sports pairs individuals with and without disabilities in team competition,” Michelle Haney, Director of Volunteers and Unified Sports said. “The goal is to provide individuals with disabilities opportunities to compete in a team environment while enjoying companionship and a fun-filled day spent on the mini golf course!”
Volunteers are needed to golf or help during the tournament on Friday, August 28th. In past years, up to 150 athletes have attended the event, and we want to make sure they all have partners to team up with. Tee off times begin at 8:00 AM. This will be a 9-hole mini golf alternate shot competition. Awards will be handed out at the conclusion of play. Lunch and a tournament T-shirt will be provided for athletes and volunteers. There is no charge to participate.
Some of the volunteer positions include:
Golf Partner: Golfing with an athlete
Awards: Handing out awards
Registration: Checking in volunteers and athletes and many more opportunities.
Special Olympics Iowa serves over 11,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the state of Iowa. Anyone with an intellectual disability is eligible to compete in Special Olympics, regardless of athletic ability.
