The Vinton-Shellsburg community has "reputation of supporting our schools and helping our students," says Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock.
A special event on Saturday, during the Vinton Cruise, will allow residents another opportunity to help those in need.
“Stuff The Bus” is a back-to-school special supply event which will happen on July 18. The event will be held in front of Michael & Dowd, 102 East 4th Street, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM during the Vinton Cruise. Bring supplies to the bus and enter the drawing to win $25 in Vinton Value Dollars, or 2”x 8’ ratchet and axle straps donated by Clickstop.
"Nationwide, more than half of the students who attend public schools live in poverty," says Hainstock. In our district, about 40% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Preparing for the start of the year is an exciting time for students and their families but it can also be a time when parents are concerned about where the money will come from so their kids have paper, pencils, crayons and other supplies so they feel prepared for learning."
The donations received through the Back-to-School Supply Drive will provide much needed assistance to VS students and their families, says the superintendent.
Monetary donations can be sent to:
