When RAGBRAI riders passing through Vinton on Thursday stopped for photos in front of the Benton County Courthouse, they were unknowingly paying tribute to Richard Schoonover's final contribution to his community.
Schoonie, as he was known to his long-time friends, died on July 20, two days after donating his over-sized bib overalls to the RAGBRAI committee, which used them as a photo prop.
"He was very proud of those overalls," said one of the many RAGBRAI volunteers.
Many riders stopped for photos, standing behind the overalls.
"He was a big man with a huge heart. He will be greatly missed," said Ed Landgrebe.
Schoonie served the community in several ways and was on the city council for a decade.
"He was a wonderful contributor to the history of Vinton. Richard did a lot for the community," said another long-time local businessman, Tom Pingenot.
