News : New era for VS sports: Vikings begin camp on artificial turf

Football players became the first VS athletes to practice on the new artificial turf.

Parents helped install the gold tubing atop the new fence around the V-S Karr Athletic Complex.

The padlock came off the gate yesterday, as Vinton-Shellsburg administrators and coaches inspected the now-finished field turf and track, and the football players became the first VS athletes to practice on the new surface.

Football camp began yesterday, with coaches guiding the players through their offensive and defensive schemes, while parents and other volunteers helped finish re-painting the black railings that surround the home bleachers. Others helped AD Jim Struve hang the banners that honor the sponsors who helped fund the project. Another group placed the gold tubing over the top of the new fence that surrounds the field.
