Virginia Gay Hospital announced today a plan to begin construction of a new clinic building at the Virginia Gay main campus in Vinton. Construction is scheduled to begin in February of 2016 with final completion planned for September of 2017.

The new Vinton Family Medical Clinic will be a two story structure with 18,500 square feet. The new facility will replace the 8,300 square foot clinic constructed in 1974. The number of personnel working in the Vinton Family Medical Clinic has increased through the years. In 1974 there were approximately 10 physicians and staff members working in the facility. Today 30 people work in the facility.

At a rare meeting involving both the Hospital Board and the Virginia Gay Healthcare Foundation Board held Tuesday evening, Virginia Gay Hospital CEO Mike Riege shared the purpose of the new facility when he said, “Whether we in healthcare like it or not, whether we think it’s a good idea or not, the days of waiting until someone is sick and then sending a bill for our services is rapidly coming to an end. The future of healthcare is in keeping people healthy and to do that we need to increase the services we provide, and we need space for new staff members to work in.”

The new space will include room for as many as nine providers (physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) and the staff to support their work. There are six providers working in the current clinic space. The original building had fifteen exam rooms, but the new clinic will have twenty-seven.

The total projected cost of the project is $5.5 Million. Virginia Gay will be providing more information about the project in the coming weeks and months.
