On Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at approximately 2 pm, The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a two vehicle accident with injuries at the north end of the construction zone on highway 218 and the Van Horne/Newhall Corner.
A 2002 Dodge Caravan Van driven by Angela Jean Shelton age 35 of Center Junction was travelling southbound on 218 when she failed to observe stopped traffic at a construction zone. Her vehicle ran into the back of 2007 Freightliner flatbed semi driven by Delbert William Meeks, age 47, of Belle Plaine. Meeks was stopped at the manned traffic control point at the construction site. Shelton’s vehicle went partially underneath the semi-trailer and struck a fork lift mounted on the back. All drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts
Shelton was flow to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic for treatment of her injures. A juvenile passenger in the Shelton vehicle along with the truck driver was uninjured.
Assisting at the scene were North Benton Ambulance, Newhall Fire and First Responders, Van Horne Fire and First Responders, Lifeguard Helicopter from Cedar Rapids, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. Investigation is continuing by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
