On September 19th, 2015 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter helped out with Farm Safety Day, held at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Farm Safety Day, an event that has been going on for 20 years, is all about teaching children the right way to act while on a farm, around equipment that can cause serious damage if those around it aren’t careful.
The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members helped set up and clean up the fairgrounds for the events, as well as lead groups from session to session and even teach a class over being safe around lawn mowers.
The event was very successful, as always! Classes were over ATV safety, PTO safety, equipment safety, first aid, lawn mower safety, chemical safety, 911 emergency calls, hidden hazards, disability awareness, and sun safety. The kids learned a lot, filled with knew knowledge that they didn’t have before, and even had fun during the sessions. Between the interactive sessions, the children had a snack and at the end of all the sessions they went back to the food booth for an amazing lunch!
All in all, the day went very well. It was a great 20th anniversary for a fantastic event that can save the lives of many by increasing the knowledge of the next generation while they are around equipment!
