The new Virginia Gay clinic building was the subject of a presentation by Mike Timmermans, VGH Healthcare Foundation Director, at Tuesday’s Vinton Kiwanis Club meeting. Mike shared drawings of the building and information about how the new space will improve healthcare in Vinton.

The new facility will be located west of the current clinic and will extend out to about the location of the ramp currently connecting the hospital and clinic parking lots. The two story clinic will provide additional space for the VGH lab so more tests can be conducted at Virginia Gay, speeding turn-around and offering patients even greater convenience. Mental health services are in the early planning stages and the new facility will have space available for a licensed social worker or psychologist.

Most important will be Virginia Gay’s ability to attract additional primary healthcare providers. With the new facility there will be room for nine providers practicing as a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. Currently six providers are crowded into the clinic space.

The total project cost is $5.5 million. Virginia Gay will fund $4 million of the cost, the Foundation is donating $500,000 and hopes to raise $1 million from community donations. Mike Timmermans reports that about 20% of the $1 million has already been pledged.
