An Albuquerque, N.M. police officer – and the father of a Vinton woman – is fighting for his life this morning after being shot multiple times following a traffic stop.
Daniel Webster, the father of Rebecca Ingham of Vinton, was still in surgery this morning following the overnight incident.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Davon Lymon, has an “extensive violent crime history, including a murder charge from 2001,” according to a statement made on the Albuquerque PD Twitter page.
We have an officer fighting for his life right now," Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden Jr. said at a hastily-arranged news conference.
Eden summarized the incident, which took place around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday evening:
"It appears at this time that the officer engaged in a traffic stop, there was an altercation and the officer was shot multiple times," Eden said.
Evidence at the scene indicates the officer's Taser stun gun was fired at some point, Eden said. The officer was wearing a body camera, and the camera has been sent to a lab for analysis, said the chief.
“They are working diligently to save this officer’s life,” Eden said. “This is, for me, a terrible day. I would ask that the city please pray for this officer, pray for his family.”
Ingham said she has very little information about her father, and thanks everyone for their prayers. She and her sisters, Ashleigh Webster of Independence and Danielle Modrow of Cedar Rapids, have spent anxious hours waiting for news of their father.
"He remains in surgery in critical condition; this is his second surgery," she said.
Doctors declared Webster's condition stable, but still critical later on Thursday. The 8-year veteran of the APD and 20-year Army veteran was named the 2013 APD Uniformed Officer of the Year.
