News : Playing for a Cure: Bingo players, sponsors help fight breast cancer

Among bras as table decorations and cookies decorated with pink ribbons, nearly 100 Bingo players and volunteers gathered at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School lunch room Sunday afternoon for the first Play for a Cure Bingo event.

Organized by Stephanie Gibbs, with assistance of the staff of Ehlingher's Vinton Express in honor of a colleague recently diagnosed, the event raised money for the Virginia Gay Hospital Gifts of Hope Fund, which helps pay for women's health services for those who cannot afford them. Thrivent Financial also helped.

The winners of each game could choose from prizes donated by dozens of area citizens and businesses.

The event raised more than $1,900 for Gifts of Hope. A variety of events have taken place through October as residents continue to support those who have had or do deal with breast cancer.
