Revisiting the Benton County ordinance prohibiting pit bulls and other “dangerous” dog breeds is on Todd Wiley’s “short list” of issues for the Benton County supervisors to address in the future.

Wiley made that comment during Tuesday’s meeting, where the supervisors unanimously voted to uphold an order removing an American Staffordshire Terrier from a home in the Timber Ridge area south of Shellsburg.

Deputy John Lindemann issued the order after responding to a report of a dog barking and growling at a person at Timber Ridge

While the dog did not bite – or even bark when he knocked on the door – Benton County Ordinance 37 requires its removal.

In addition to alligators, chimpanzees, bats, lions, wolves, badgers and similar animals, the ordinance specifically mentions: “Any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being of the breed of Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, any other breed commonly known as pit bulls, pit bull dogs or pit bull terriers, or a combination of any of these breeds.”

Owner Carol Offerman told the supervisors that the dog was a gift from her recently-deceased boyfriend, and she relied on it for comfort therapy. She told the supervisors the dog had already been moved to Cedar Rapids, where she believed, she too, would be moving.

Wiley told Offerman that Lindemann was merely doing his job, enforcing the ordinance that was adopted in 2000. Wiley said he believed that Benton County, like many other area governments, banned pit bulls after some high-profile attacks by dogs of that and similar breeds.

Yet, said Wiley a life-long farmer, to claim that all pit bulls are dangerous is like saying that all Black Angus bulls are violent. He supports changing the ordinance. However, he said, the supervisors are also required to uphold current rules.

Terry Hertle and Don Frese agreed, and the order for the removal of the dog remains in place.

There is no set date for a discussion on the issue, but said several times during Tuesday's meeting that he would like to see the supervisors change it.

WK April 1, 2016, 8:05 pm It\'s not the breed of dog that is vicious it\'s how they are raised. Raised right any dog will be a good dog. I have to dogs that go crazy every time people walk by but they would never attack. I hope they look into this loosing a dog because of breed isn\'t right. If the dog growled and barked but didn\'t attack then every dog who does the same to the mailman daily are guilty.
SH April 1, 2016, 9:09 pm Not all dogs of a certain breed are to be feared. Hope this link works: //www.pawmygosh.com/xena-and-jonny/?utm_content=buffer8d379&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_source=ild&utm_campaign=Animals
GF April 2, 2016, 11:29 pm The Bully breed is no more vicious than any other breed. It is how it is raised and treated. The most vicious dog I have ever seen was a Chihuahua. She would attack any person, dog, cat or anything that looked at her wrong. Put the blame on irresponsible owners not the dogs. Thank you,
AC April 3, 2016, 11:05 am What about english bulldogs? They are nothing like the staffordshire terrier aka pit bull, there are 3 families in this town who have english bulldogs and they are not at all aggressive!!
HM April 10, 2016, 9:49 am Pit bulls are mauling and killing like no other breed in history. On average they are killing a person one every 2 weeks. Maulings are daily. Beloved pets are killed by pits daily. Pits were specifically and selectively designed, as any other purebred, for a job and that job is to kill.
JR November 28, 2021, 1:09 pm There's a lot of ignorance in these comments. Anyone who thinks they were breed to fight needs to stop talking and go do some research. They're called nanny dogs for a reason you idiots. It all has to do to the responsibility of the owner/trainer. There's no such thing as a fighting dog. It's a learned/taught behavior. You can teach any dog how to be vicious. Pits are targeted because they have amazing physical capabilities. People stop being ignorant and recognize that it's not the dog. It's the owners.
