News : Vinton Today, Celebrating Earth Day...doing our part to be green

For Earth Day, the question was posed, "How many trees were saved by Vinton Today being online?"

And having been in the newspaper business, we took it further. How many tires, and oil and cars and man hours were saved by Vinton Today?

The short answer, we have no idea.

The long answer...various sources estimate that 500,000 trees are used just to print the Sunday paper,

You know, the one with all the flyers, and coupons and the one you buy just for that.

We could run the idea into the ground about how we are doing our part to save the enviroment, one story at a time, but you get that.

The other advantages are that you won't find our front page blowing around your front yard, it's always neatly on your desktop, just waiting for you to open and read it.

There's no ink on your fingers from reading Vinton Today.

We don't even do silly promotions to get you to subscribe.

Our theory was, "If you build it they will come!" (Hey it worked for Kevin Costner)

The theory proved to be true.

We built something that others are trying to do, and do in the big cities, but for small town Iowa, we don't think it's being done anywhere else.

Online only.

No trees harmed in the making of this website.

No oil used to deliver this paper.

No huge staff trying to get it to your house.

No tires being run bald to deliver it to your house (just old tires being caught on fire thanks to a slow news day)

Nope, all this is saved by an idea that something could be produced locally, enviromentally friendly and also consumer friendly.

Which brings me to another point.

We are in the midst of our annual fundraiser.

This year, we have taken on the project to rebuild the website, updating the technology so that we will always be here for you.

We are asking for you to dig deep this year, and to send what you can to help us get this accomplished.

We have received many donations from those in the county, and we appreciate that.Keep sending them in!

Just out of curiosity we'd love to hear from all the different states as well. We've had responses from Arizona, North Carolina, Texas and from other areas of our country.
