Our yearly 3rd grade Ag Day took place on Wednesday, April 27. The day was filled with many different activities to get the students involved and interested in learning about agriculture. The areas that the students were taught about included beef, dairy, swine, horse, poultry, rabbit, sheep and goats, corn and soybeans, and equipment safety.

The Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community, and Belle Plaine FFA Chapters have members sign-up for different student teaching areas. They go over to the Benton County Fair Grounds once a year, for 3rd grade Ag Day where they teach students about the importance of agriculture.

Agricultural education is important because without knowing about animals and how to care for and properly handle them, we would lose out on a valuable resource to get food. Agricultural land provides a home for 75% of the nation’s wildlife. People would not know how to farm properly and lots of jobs wouldn’t be provided. Agriculture provides 15% of the United States population with jobs, which is equivalent to 21 million workers.

This day is a learning experience for everyone involved. It not only gets the younger kids learning, but it teaches the older kids how to lead and manage a group of people.
