Students of the Vinton-Shellsburg West Campus the site (the alternative high school program) have spent much of the past several weeks in a Community Service class. The students helped several local organizations in an effort to improve Vinton and also teach community involvement.

Their schedule included the following projects in April and May:

4/21 & 4/22 - Working on bike trail with VPRD;

4/26 - Community Service Project in the West Campus neighborhood - working with Old School Produce;

5/2 through 5/5 - Rogers Park - various projects with the Benton County Conservation Department;

5/10 through 5/12 - ISU/Benton Co. Extension - working on community garden projects.

On Tuesday, Mike Elwick and the VPRD honored the students with an ice cream social at Old Produce.

VPRD Director Brad Barker said the students were very helpful in the trail-clearing project; Elwick said they accomplished much in the Old School gardens.

While at Old School, the students saw the antique car that Elwick had recently purchased and posed for a photo in the area where they had worked.
