On Sunday, May 29, 2016, at approximately 4:22 p.m., law enforcement and EMS units were dispatched to 211 E. 4th Street in Vinton for a report of a disturbance involving an intoxicated person breaking windows.

Upon arrival, a 37 year-old female was identified as the intended victim of an assault and was found suffering from apparent serious injuries primarily on and about her head. Roger LaVerne Hartman, age 38, of Vinton, was also found to be suffering from minor injuries.
Both Hartman and the female victim were transported by separate ambulances to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.
While at Virginia Gay Hospital, Hartman assaulted two officers including a Benton County Sheriff’s deputy and a Vinton Police officer causing minor injuries to both before he was able to be restrained.
Criminal complaints were subsequently filed against Hartman for the following;
1) Burglary 1st degree, Class B Felony, section 713.1 / 713.3(1)(c) of the Code of Iowa
2) Willful Injury, Class C Felony, 708.4(1) of the Code of Iowa
3) Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer Causing Injury (Aggravated Misdemeanor), section 708.1(2) / 708.3A(3) of the Code of Iowa (TWO COUNTS)
Hartman appeared before a Benton County Magistrate on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 and remains in the Benton County Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond.
The Vinton Police Department was assisted during this investigation by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the Benton County Attorney’s Office, and North Benton Ambulance.
