As an unfortunate consequence of Operation Iraqi Freedom and America's war on terror, many children of our active-duty military personnel are now members of single parent families. In most cases, this also means their chances to attend college have greatly diminished. The American Legion has established the "American Legion Legacy Scholarship.". The American Legion Riders are proud to take an active role to help these children by raising money on the American Legion Legacy Run. The 5th annual Legacy Run was held August 22-26, 2010 including stops in Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tuesday, August 24 included a well attended luncheon at Camp Dodge National Guard installation in Johnston, Iowa. 8 members from Post #166 Shellsburg Legion Riders were present to watch Riders President Gary Bonesteel present a $1587.00 check to Clarence Hill, National Commander of the American Legion. Rider participation included a total of 4897 miles for the Legacy Run. Four of the riders assisted in a fuel stop in Clear Lake, Iowa while three others rode to the final destination in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition to money donated to the Legacy Run Scholarship, the Shellsburg Riders also presented the WWII Honor Flight $1900.00. Post #166 Shellsburg Legion Riders are members of the American Legion family (American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion). Meetings are the 2nd Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. If interested in becoming a rider member, please stop in for a meeting at the Legion Hall in Shellsburg.
