Thanks to everyone passing through Vinton who supported VFD's Muscular Dystrophy Association Boot Block Fundraiser.

We just wanted to share what exactly we mean when we say "Thanks for supporting MDA" as we hand you your sticker.

The tradition began in 1952 when Charlie Crowley, a father of two sons diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) mentioned to his friend, George Graney, a Firefighter in South Boston “They will not live to be 21 years old,” as the family couldn't afford treatment and the boys were robbed of their mobility to live normal childhoods.

FF Graney got 20 other brother firefighters and did a door-to-door canister drive that raised $5,000. FF Graney learned that there were many families with children suffering with MD, Graney made it his mission in life to help these children and fight this dreaded disease. In 1953 the entire Boston Fire Dept raised $20,000 by "filling their boots" with donations from the community. After that, the International Association of Firefighters voted to partner with the MDA until a cure was found for the disease.

All proceeds are donated directly to MDA and not a penny stays with Vinton Fire. We sincerely appreciate everyone's donations but also to the public at large for driving carefully around our members so that they can all go home safely.
