Nearly 2000 pounds of food was donated to Operation Backpack which operates out of Tilford Elementary. The food was donated by Pepsi and Quaker Oats, who donates about 3 times a year. Several members of the area Lions Club helped to unload the food, as well as AmeriCorp and area students.
Molly Noren who oversees the program explained that the food donated to the program helps about 100 families a week. She said as the year goes on the number will continue to grow.
The types of foods used to fill the backpacks are foods that children can prepare for themselves.
Operation Backpack uses funds donated to purchase food through the area food pantry which can buy food much more cheaply than you can get at the store. If you are interested in making a donation of money to help out, simply drop off donations at Tilford and let the office know that it's for Operation Backpack.
