At the VMEU/VMCU (Vinton Municipal Electric and Communication Utilities) meetings, last night, progress on the building of the iVinton fiber network has, unfortunately, had to be delayed because of the weather.
With snow arriving in October, it moved the timeline a good 6 weeks. The original thought was that there would be customers up and running by the end of the year. Unfortunately, when the ground froze, the risk of damaging equipment, supplies and property outweighs the benefit of continuing. It is estimated that things will resume in the spring and they will be able to start "lighting up" the network then. There are many other things happening this month so that testing and preparations will continue, but there just won't be any more digging in the area.
Please leave any flags in your lawns even in the snow. These are marking underground lines, and is part of the expense that the company would have to complete the project.
Angie Wittmer also spoke at the meeting explaining that if you are unsure of what you are now paying, bring in your bill for service and she'll be happy to help you figure out which services you have and how much you are paying for them.
Currently, there are nearly 400 people signed up for iVinton and more continue to stop in at the office to talk to the ladies there about services.
On a personal note, I just ran the speed test on my internet service, and I am at 15.2 mbps download speed and 2.6 uploading...the minimum speed that iVinton is offering is 100 mbps. I've shared how much I like speed right? Knowing that I'm putting along at 15.2 and 2.6 mbps makes me want that faster "car!"
So I don't know if I were you and I had a contract coming up for renewal, if it were me, I'd first look at it as the dreaded salesman at the door, I probably wouldn't even answer the door, but if I absolutely had to, I'd prolong, procrastinate and do all I could to leave my options open. Now that's just me.
While I'm driving along in my 4 cylinder car, I prefer an 8 cylinder when I want to hit the highway...
