Football fans in California have been hearing the words "Vinton, Iowa" for the past week, as the San Francisco 49ers football announced that it has hired a man born in Vinton to be its special teams coach.
(For football novices, special teams include those players who play when the team kicks off or returns a kick-off, or when a team punts, or returns a punt, as well as field goal attempts.)
There is no record of Brad Seely in the Vinton-Shellsburg Athletic Hall of Fame. Seely played football at South Dakota State, where he landed his first coaching job. He served as an assistant coach at Colorado State, Southern Methodist University, North Carolina State and the University of the Pacific. His last coaching job at the college level was as offensive line coach at Oklahoma State. The linemen he coached in 1988 helped running back Barry Sanders win the Heisman Trophy.
On the professional level, Seely coached for the Colts, Jets, Patriots and Browns before being hired in January as the special teams coach for the San Francisco 49ers.
