An 1886 novel and a musical based on a 2001 movie provided the material that VInton-Shellsburg High School students used to earn a spot in last week's All-State Large Group Speech Festival.

Vinton residents had a chance to see those performances during the Jazz Pizazz contest Friday night.

Junior Alex Springer performed his "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" mime routine, which he performed at the prestigious All-State Speech event Saturday, Feb. 19. The six girls of the VSHS Musical Theatre's version of "Legally Blonde" also performed the two numbers they will sing at the All-State Speech event.

The Iowa High School Speech Association sponsors the All-State Festival, which took place in Ames.
