Scott White and Julie Hansen of Vinton and Brian Reeves of Shellsburg, served meals to displaced residents of the Geneva Towers
Scott Hansen, Mary Evens, both of Vinton, and Steve Armentrout of Cedar Rapids wait to serve the next shelter resident a hot meal.
The Benton County Salvation Army Extension service had an opportunity to put into practice what they have trained for. The team was able to assist the Cedar Rapids Salvation Army Corp to feed the residents who were displaced by the Geneva Towers apartment building fire that occurred on February 20th, 2022. The residents are being sheltered at the Veterans Memorial Building in Cedar Rapids. The team served a hot food breakfast to approximately 50-60 sheltered residents this last weekend. Another type of service activity that our local team is involved in is doing the canteen truck feeding of people at homeless shelters in Cedar Rapids on Saturday mornings. Our local team does this on a rotation of just once every 6 weeks, as the Cedar Rapids Corp does the other 5 weeks. Currently, our team is ready to start the canteen run by 7 am and is done by 10 am. They visit several shelters and a few other places to hand out a simple breakfast food, hot drinks, along with a sack lunch. Around 80 people are served.
