For three days from March 9th to the 11th, a group of ten members from the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Oak 2 team located in Vinton came to Vinton-Shellsburg High School to lend a helping hand to the local Vikings and Vikettes.

They deserve an A because they worked so hard for it, says VSHS Principal Kirk Johnson.

The team worked in conjunction with Larry Harken, the woodshop teacher, to properly outfit the newly constructed storage shed. Also with the help of VSHS Senior Colton Stewart, the team created a room filled with storage shelves, helmet hooks, and jersey racks for the football equipment.

Coach Jim Struve, athletic director and varsity baseball coach, he explained that the storage area would be used for more than just the football teams. “Everyone will benefit in the end from this new storage area.”

The coach’s excitement carried over to the third and final day. The NCCC corps members paid their own respects to the late Ron Relf by improving the overall quality of his memorial field.

Brenden Rule, facility groundskeeper, orchestrated a team removal of the old and weathered tarp formerly used to cover the baseball diamond. In addition, the group spread over 64 tons of limestone on top of the long-overdue, worn-down warning track. Everyone working on the project feels extremely satisfied with the work that was accomplished and hopes that the newly improved athletic facilities will be put to good use.

“Its great to see young people giving back,” said Johnson when he was informed that the NCCC group completed a total of 240 labor hours over the three-day period. The mission of the AmeriCorps NCCC is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through team-based national and community service.

K April 6, 2011, 9:43 am Let\'s not forget the 3 girls softball coaches who gave up their weekend to get the girl\'s field ready, and Grimm Constuction who donated the expense for the use of a skid loader.
KJ April 6, 2011, 10:11 pm The intent of this news release from Vinton-Shellsburg High School was to promote the efforts of Vinton-based AmeriCorps NCCC. Their contributions to our community, along with multiple other communities, has been noble and valuable.

Colton Gale, member of AmeriCorps Oak #2, is the Media Relations leader. He created this story and in a collaborative effort I agreed to promote the efforts of this group through local media.

Our school receives a tremendous amount of support from local business owners and community members. We also have dedicated coaches. All of their efforts are appreciated.

This story is about the outstanding people of AmeriCorps NCCC.

Kirk Johnson, VSHS Principal
