Troy and Margaret Krug of Vinton joined dozens of other couples at the 49th Iowa State Square Dance Convention this past weekend. They have been square dancing for more than 30 years, and are hoping more dancers will join them.
The Krugs are members of the Rapid Eights Square and Round Dance Club in Cedar Rapids. The club dances the first and third Friday of each month at the First Baptist Church in Marion.
The Iowa State Square and Round Dance Convention was held April 8 & 9 at the Marriott Hotel in Cedar Rapids.
Over 600 dancers attended from all across Iowa and surrounding states, including Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, and one couple from California. All-day dancing, meetings, after parties, style show, fun and fellowship went on both days.
The crowd twirled and danced to many different callers and cuers from all over Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin. It was a family event with many young people taking part in all the festivities with their parents and grandparents.
All the dancers are looking forward to doing this again next year as Bettendorf will be hosing the 50th Convention- “50 Is Great In The Hawkeye State”. If you didn't get a chance to make it to the Marriott this weekend you can catch the square dancers at many activities this summer around Iowa. Watch for the full colorful skirts and people in squares having a great time together.
