Several Vinton area World War II veterans attended the orientation for the April 26 Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
The trip to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial and other military landmarks is provided free of charge to World War II veterans to honor them for their service.
Vinton veterans going on this flight include: Burt Davis, William "Jay" Bolin, Jim Peterson and Milton Smith. Vinton residents going as guardians include Cindy Elwick, who will accompany her father, Jay; Jeff Peterson, who will accompany Burt Davis; Deb Rundlett and Steve Lucas. Roger Uthoff is one of the Honor Flight volunteers who helps organize and raise funds for the event. The Cedar Rapids-based Eastern Iowa Honor Flight plans three trips to Washington, D.C. this year.
A new organization in the Waterloo area also plans two flights in 2011; some VInton area residents are participating in that event, as well.
