The Shellsburg American Legion Post has made improvements in the area surrounding the Freedom Rock located next to the Shellsburg Legion. The Legion added asphalt to the area around the Freedom Rock located on the property and it looks spectacular! The Freedom Riders made a $3,000 donation toward the project.
The new drive compliments the area quite handsomely. If you would like to donate specifically for the parking lot or for flags, please put a note on your donation as you place it into the visitor registration box. All other funds are placed into an account for upkeep and care.

Where the rock came from and more about the Veteran honored on the rock.
The three veterans honored on the Benton County Freedom Rock:
Vinton native Everett Warner became famous for his ship camouflaging system
Shellsburg native Mark Reynolds was KIA on 3/24/1945.
Vinton Native, the only chaplain assistant to be awarded the Medal of Honor, cited as a model of bravery and selflessness. Needing troops to scale the 30-foot fortification and lay down suppressive fire, the unit's commander, Col. Aaron S. Daggett, called for volunteers. Titus immediately stepped forward, saying, "I'll try, sir!"
